CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Aug. 14, Eddie Contreras pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in Auburn after a new witness said he accidentally shot Luis Cerda while both were drinking and playing with a handgun—his earlier murder charge was reduced in a plea agreement. Auburn Reporter
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Auburn Emergency Management is offering free emergency preparedness classes to local groups such as community organizations, schools, and workplaces with 10 or more participants—these sessions cover local hazards, building an emergency kit, and making household plans. The Valley Regional Fire Authority also will provide CPR and first aid courses every Saturday at locations in Auburn, Kent, and Renton with half-day or full-day options at set fees. Auburn Reporter
- ➤ On Aug. 18, the Auburn City Council approved an amendment allowing Mayor Nancy Backus to update the interlocal agreement with King County District Court—ensuring probation services remain uninterrupted until Dec. 31—and it will take effect once signed by both parties. Auburn Reporter
